Steven Smets

I work at BASF Antwerp in the Technical Inspection department. This department is responsible for monitoring technical safety.

I perform welding engineering design checks on pressure equipment to subsequently perform the various required inspections, often at foreign manufacturers. In addition, I manage a team of welding inspectors. In case of urgent problems, such as breakdowns, I ensure a quick and correct solution to guarantee safe installations.

To perform my duties successfully, I need a mix of technical skills and management skills:

• Technical knowledge: A thorough understanding of pressure equipment, piping, PED 2014/68/EU and harmonized standards.
• Welding and Materials Engineering: In-depth knowledge of welding processes and material behavior.
• Project Management: Effective leadership and communication in managing welding inspectors.
• Problem-Solving Thinking: Be able to identify and solve technical problems quickly and efficiently.
• Flexibility: Since inspections often take place abroad, good communication skills, including language skills, are essential.
