Advanced course in asphalt paving
The follow-up course on "Asphalt Pavements" goes through the entire process from the level of requirements for the road construction as a whole to the level of soil and building materials.
This course gives you guidance in making the right technical choice within an ever-changing set of requirements. The course goes through the entire process from the level of requirements for the road construction as a whole to the level of soil and building materials. The determining factors that influence the behavior of asphalt mixtures, as well as how a standard construction is designed and alternatives are covered.

The follow-up course 'Asphalt Pavements' gives you guidance in making the right technical choice within an ever-changing set of requirements. The course goes through the entire process from the level of requirements for the road construction as a whole to the level of soil and building materials. The decisive factors that influence the behavior of asphalt mixtures, as well as how a standard structure is designed and alternatives are covered.
Program
The following topics will be covered:
- Road design and the asphalt pavement.
- Determining building classes
- Bitumen in road construction (incl. tour of bitumen lab)
- Fillers and mastic
- Granules
- Mixture design and mixtures SB.250
- Pradoweb
- Mechanics of mixtures in road structure.
- Vertical road dimensioning with Qualidim
- Heavily loaded roads in a port environment and the use of FBGs to monitor the behavior of the asphalt pavement over time
- Vertical road dimensioning with Weslea
- Use of new technologies to monitor asphalt pavement construction
- Road surface properties: skid resistance, structure and noise reduction
- Pavement management system
- Research within SuPAR
The course consists of both lectures and computer-based exercises. You will bring your own laptop for this purpose.
Additional information
Are you an asphalt technologist or designer of asphalt pavements? Do you have general knowledge of asphalt mixtures through experience and/or education and are you employed by an asphalt processor, asphalt plant, government, engineering firm, manager of industrial sites or at a knowledge institution? Then this course is an excellent choice for you!
Most classes are taught in Dutch. Some of the specialized presentations are given in English.
